My role is to help find and process books that patrons request. I start the night with a list of 100+ books in all the various sections and find what I can in an hour-and-a-half. For the last half hour I scan them into the system, label them, and shelve them for pick-up.

While I don't have plans to participate this year

While I don't have plans to participate this year in #middlegrademarch, that hasn't stopped my youngest daughter from reading in the genre. And while I posted about her towering stack 📚 a few posts ago, these three made the "re-read" cut. Plus, the cookbook kick-started her interest in baking (highly recommend if you have a wannabe baker in your house - the chocolate cake made with mayo was unbelievably good - swipe for pictures of cake and cookies).

📖Pie by Sarah Weeks has a grumpy cat and a sweet story. My daughter's biggest (and only) complaint is with the epilogue where apparently the wrong two characters are married. Recipes included. The cute bunny at the animal shelter enjoyed the story too as my daughter did some volunteer reading for the shelter animals.

📖A Tangle of Knots by Lisa Graff is set in a world where people often receive Talents - not always remarkable or helpful. 11-year-old Cady is an orphan with an uncanny ability to know what cake would best suit someone and then to whip it up. Through her interactions and cake-baking an understanding of her past develops. Complete with recipes - which we haven't tried yet but apparently are going to.

📖Bliss by Kathryn Littlewood is the first in a trilogy and - according to both my daughters - the best one of the three. Rose and her siblings are charged with keeping the family's magical Bliss Cookery Booke locked up while their parents are out of town. But what could possibly go wrong with trying some Love Muffins or Cookies of Truth? What indeed.

So bake some cookies, whip up a pie, or go to the store and get Oreos like I do, and enjoy some bake-ish, bookish reads. Reading and baking/eating is a great combination 😋👩‍🍳🍪🧁🥧🍰

I haven't finished reading Rembrandt is in the Wind by @russramsey1 but I'm going to go ahead and highly recommend it! I usually read multiple books at a time, but for the past couple days this has been my exclusive go-to read.

Ramsey takes readers chronologically through several influential painters and details their stories and art. While the book is written to highlight how art and artists reflect key lessons for faith, it is Ramsey's storytelling about the artists and his passionate descriptions of their work that take center stage.

From familiar artists like Caravaggio, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh to less familiar names like Jean Frédéric Bazille, and Henry O. Tanner, and Lilias Trotter, Ramsey introduces readers to intriguing stories, quirks of history, and nefarious deeds.

I just finished teaching various art movements to my girls - we did a fun review/retention exercise of making flash cards to represent each movement. I used pine trees, my youngest used cats, and my eldest chose hearts. All that to say, art was already on my brain and Ramsey's book heightened my connection to it. We finished our activity today and a post about Rembrandt is in the Wind seemed a fitting conclusion (even if my reading is not yet concluded 😬).

Happy Valentine's Day! This isn't a holiday that I do a whole lot with. We write affirming notes for our girls on heart-shaped paper and tape them to their doors in the first 2 weeks of February, but otherwise we don't make a big fuss over this one.

However, understanding what love is and what it looks like in practice has been a subject on my mind (and in the books that I read) for many years. As I've studied and thought about love, various aspects of how it intersects my life have come to the forefront.

The letter that Paul wrote to the church in Corinth many centuries ago contains 1 Corinthians 13. 1 Corinthians 13 is commonly referred to as "the love chapter" in the Bible (though I prefer Romans 12:9-21). My thoughts started to adopt the rhythm and pacing of this chapter, and I used it to organize them.

And then I used Canva to put a pretty background behind fancy font to make it more IG-appropriate 😅 Where do your thoughts on love take you?
